What the extension does

Not a Translator Experiment is a companion extension that enriches the definition tooltip of the Not a Translator dictionary: it can show an illustrative image, a graph of related meanings (SenseMap) and a graph of the word's family and origin (RootMap). All of these are triggered by the word or expression you hover over or select on a web page.

What data is processed

To perform a lookup, the extension transmits only the word or expression you choose to look up (a piece of website text content) to the third-party services listed below. It does not send the page you are on, its URL, the surrounding text, your identity, or any other content.

What is NOT collected

• No personally identifiable information (name, email, age, ID).
• No accounts, passwords, or authentication data.
• No financial or payment information.
• No browsing history, list of visited pages, or page URLs.
• No location, GPS, or IP-based geolocation is requested or used.
• No clicks, keystrokes, mouse tracking, or on-page analytics.
• No advertising, no user profiling, no sale or sharing of data with data brokers.

Third-party services contacted

Each service receives only the looked-up word or expression, and only for the feature it powers:

• Wiktionary (wiktionary.org) — definitions, synonyms/antonyms, word family and etymology.
• notatr-proxy (a Cloudflare Worker operated by the developer) — caches image lookups and holds the API credentials for the image providers below, so those credentials never reside in your browser.
• Unsplash and Openverse — illustrative photographs, retrieved through the notatr-proxy worker.
• iNaturalist, GBIF, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons — photographs of species and objects.
• OpenStreetMap / Nominatim — map thumbnails for place names.
• LINDAT / UDPipe (lindat.mff.cuni.cz) — reduces a word to its base form (lemmatization).

These services receive the request under their own privacy policies. As with any web request, they technically see the originating IP address; the extension neither adds nor stores it. Lookups sent to third parties (Wiktionary, Wikidata, OpenStreetMap and the rest) carry no identifier of any kind.

Donor key

Some features are reserved for donors. A donor receives a key — a short signed string such as NTX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXX — which they paste into the extension's popup. This is the one place where a request is not anonymous, so it is worth being precise about it:

• The key is derived from the donor's email address, but does not contain it: only a salted, irreversible fingerprint of it is embedded. Your email address is never sent to, nor stored on, any server as part of this mechanism.
• The key is transmitted only to the developer's own two services — the notatr-proxy Cloudflare Worker and the developer's cache server — and never to any third party. It is sent to check that it is valid, and to authorise image and synonym lookups.
• Because the same key accompanies those requests, the developer's services can in principle relate several lookups to the same key. No log associating keys with looked-up words is kept, and the key cannot be turned back into your email address — but we prefer to state the capability rather than claim an anonymity that would not be exact.
• Nothing else changes: requests to third-party services remain anonymous, and the key plays no part in them.

The key is stored in chrome.storage.sync, which means your browser synchronises it across the devices signed into your browser profile (Google or Mozilla account), exactly as it does for your bookmarks. If you prefer to avoid that, disable extension synchronisation in your browser settings; the key can be re-entered by hand on each device. Clearing the field in the popup removes it.

Caching

To keep lookups fast, results may be cached — in your browser's memory for the current session, and on the developer's Cloudflare edge / cache server. This cache is keyed by the word or expression only, is fully anonymous, and is never linked to any user identity.

Data stored on your device

• chrome.storage.local — your four on/off toggles (extension enabled, images, SenseMap, RootMap), and the result of the last donor-key check (valid or not, and its expiry date). These stay on your device and are never transmitted.
• chrome.storage.sync — the donor key itself, if you entered one. Unlike the above, this store is synchronised by your browser across your devices (see “Donor key”).

Nothing else is written to your device: no lookup history, no list of the words you consulted, and no page or document content. Note that definitions themselves are cached on the developer's server, indexed by word — see “Caching” above; that shared cache records the word and its definition, never who requested it.

Donations

Donations are entirely optional and are handled by external providers (PayPal, Buy Me a Coffee) outside the extension. If you email us after donating, we use your email address only to reply, to send the install link, and to generate your donor key — never for marketing, and it is not shared. The address is kept in ordinary correspondence, not in any database queried by the extension.

Children

The extension is a general-audience dictionary tool and is not directed at children, nor does it knowingly collect data from them.

This policy may be updated as features evolve; the “Last updated” date above will change accordingly.
